Rotation Information
Tulare County oversees the mental health services at the County Correctional Facility. The facility, in addition to housing 1500 inmates, now houses 2 new state programs designed to address state hospital overcrowding for inmates that have been found incompetent to stand trial. The "Jail Based Competency Treatment (JBCT)" program and the "Early Access and Stabilization Services (EASS)" program provide psychiatric services, competency evaluations, neuropsychological testing and competency restoration to these inmates. The maximums censuses of the JBCT and EASS programs are 15 and 25 patients respectively and the maximum length of stays are 90 days. Both PGY1 and PGY4 residents rotate through these 2 programs for 1 month each during their forensic rotation and residents are actively engaged in all aspects of the workflows. They participate in the treatment planning process and work closely with the interdisciplinary team to help restore patients to competency. Residents have dedicated office space in several areas of the facility and have ample access to computers. They recieve access and personal logins to the electronic medical record and enter both clinical documentation and medication orders. The work closely with the onsite psychologists to administer and interpret neuropsych testing and also engage in the competency restoration curriculum, which includes both group and individual sessions.
